Improve Your Houseplant Drainage – What to Use

If you want to have healthy and thriving plants, then proper soil drainage is a must. There are many characteristics that a plant needs to be healthy. In this article, we’ll explore some tips and techniques for improving plant soil drainage so that your plants can flourish.

As a general rule, to improve house plant drainage, use a quality soil mix with perlite, sand, or gravel. You can also improve drainage by adding holes to the bottom of the container, and adding stones or gravel at the bottom inch or two of the container. Then water only when the soil is dry and make sure that excess water is drained out of the container.

1. Use the right soil

The right soil mix is crucial for good drainage. Most plants prefer a soil mix that contains a blend of organic matter and inorganic material like perlite. This allows for water to drain through the soil and prevent the soil for holding too much water. You can also purchase a soil mix that is specifically formulated for certain types of plants, such as cacti, or succulents.

Another way to improve the drainage is by adding organic soil. This will help the soil from becoming compacted. The promotes good soil drainage and root promotion. The organic material can be leaves, mulch/ wood chips, or tree bark.

2. Incorporating Drainage Materials

Incorporating drainage materials like gravel, sticks, sand, or perlite (as mentioned above) will allow for water to move more freely through the soil. These materials can be mixed in the soil or added to the bottom of the container. If you add it to the bottom of the container this will keep the roots off of the bottom of the container and out of the most wet part of the soil layers. You will want to have a good mix of soil and the added drainage material.

3. Monitoring watering

Proper watering is important for good soil drainage. Over watering can be detrimental to your plants health despite the tips and solutions above. Over watering can cause numerous issues, such as water logging soil and leading to root rot. Water logging occurs when the plants soil retains the water for a prolonged period. On the other hand, under watering can cause soil to become too dry and compact. Monitor your plants regularly and water them according to the plants specific needs.

Wrapping it up!

To wrap this up, improving soil drainage is an extremely important factor in maintaining your healthy and thriving plants. By using the right soil, incorporating drainage materials, and monitoring watering, you can prevent soil compacting, water logging. Happy gardening!
